Chapter 10

He was in hell. There was no other word to describe having to watch as Wolfe ran full tilt in his animal form when Noble could have been back at the house, in bed with his mate. Add to that, Wolfe seemed to understand the situation perfectly and was taking some sick joy out of making Noble wait.

Not even all his years in the human labs having experiments run that weren’t even remotely humane could measure the torture he was in right now. Noble couldn’t even shift. If he had, there was no way he’d have been able to control his bison from running home to claim their mate once and for all.

Two brutal hours after Wolfe had shifted into his animal, he finally trotted over to Noble. Once back in his human form, he quickly donned his clothes. The smirk on the man’s face confirmed Noble’s suspicions. Wolfe had known just how much Noble hadn’t wanted him there.

Scowling, Noble pushed off the side of his truck and opened the driver’s door. “Asshole,” he muttered before climbing in behind the steering wheel.

Wolfe chuckled. “You could have just told us to leave.”

Yeah, right. “Tell the Second-in-Command of the Alliance to leave when he asked to be shown the farm?” Noble asked incredulously. “You know I’d never disrespect you or Alek that way.” Although he was seriously considering kicking Wolfe’s ass for keeping him from his mate.

Wolfe threw back his head and let out a booming laugh. “Serves you right for hiding yourself away all these years. You were one of us for a long time, Noble, and then you just dropped off the face of the Earth, never once calling. Friends don’t do that.”

Feeling like a heel, Noble apologized. “You’re right. I should have at least called. I’m sorry.”

His old friend gave him a wicked grin. “Consider us even. Now let’s get you home to your mate. Or did you want to wait longer before claiming him?” The chuckle Wolfe gave was pure evil as Noble sped home.

“You really are an ass, you know that?” But this time Noble was laughing, too. He never should have just abandoned all his friends. In the future he’d have to do better.

“How are things going with the cleanup?” The missile had landed too close to one of the Northern Territories’ main towns, Bozeman.

After the Great War, the humans had given the paranormals seven “territories” to live in. The Northern Territory consisted of what used to be North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, British Columbia, Southern Alberta, Southern Saskatchewan, and Southern Manitoba. Even though the Alliance now ruled the territory, not all of the humans who’d been living there had wanted to move out.

With permission from Alek, they had been allowed to stay so long as they didn’t have a problem with paranormals. Most didn’t care if someone was a human or not. They just wanted to live on the land their families had owned for generations. Bozeman had become sort of a mecca for the humans living in Montana.
